Call for Papers: International Mediterranean Conference on Transnational Imagineries

2016 International Mediterranean Conference

co-organised by the Institute for Mediterranean Studies, Busan University of Foreign Studies

the Mediterranean Institute, University of Malta

“Transnational imaginaries: the Mediterranean past and presence”

The fourth conference in the series organised by the Institute for Mediterranean Studies and the Mediterranean Institute at the University of Malta will be held on the 27-28 January 2016 at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies, Busan University of Foreign Studies.

The articulations of a transnational imaginary have always been present in the Mediterranean region where borders have often been porous, generating viable, alternative visions and conceptions of what constitutes ‘Mediterranean identity.’ Pointing to the crux of current debates and scholars in Mediterranean studies that transcend national boundaries and enmities, this conference seeks to explore the Mediterranean through the mapping of a history of cultural exchanges found on or affected by ’transnational imaginaries’, that is, the crossing and redrawing of borders through culturally generated and imaginary maps.

Papers dealing with these past and present configurations of transnationalism are invited to contribute to an interdisciplinary discussion involving Mediterranean philosophy, history, language, literature and culture.

We will also consider the question of Mediterranean transnationalism both conceptually and in comparative analyses engaging European, Arab and other states outside the Mediterranean vista, among other possibilities.

Conference topics include:

Human movement: notions of home(land), nomadism, migration, diaspora, refugees;

Geographical arrangement: space and borders, locality, globalization;

Historical processes: from archaeological to contemporary influx;

Literary, Linguistic, Artistic, Cinematic, Media and Digital representations of transnational imaginaries

All proposals should be sent to this address: and <>

Proposals should not exceed 500 words including title of paper, full name of author and institutional details.
